Literary Multilingualism: The Formation of European Identity in a Global Context
Lecture Series in Summer Semester 2026
How can multilingual texts and media open up new perspectives on established conceptions of identity and worldviews, cultural and political orders, and the possibilities for shaping them? In what ways can translingual and transcultural forms of expression serve to depict migration, globalization, sociocultural diversity, language change, class affiliations, transcultural encounters, and transnational interconnections, and to challenge national stereotypes?
This interdisciplinary lecture series examined how literary multilingualism, as an aesthetic strategy and cultural practice, contributes to the negotiation of European identities in a global context. The focus was on both historical and contemporary perspectives that demonstrate how voices in literature, film, theater, and digital media navigate between languages, cultures, and political spaces, thereby opening up new forms of self-reference and world-reference.
The aim of the lecture series was to demonstrate how multilingualism, as a transcultural practice, reflects and expands conceptions of European identity and opens up new approaches to individual and societal belonging in a Europe that increasingly defines itself through diversity and cultural pluralism.
