Current Projects
  • World Literature in the Post-Migrant Society (Habilitation Project)

Against the background of an increasing pluralisation and hybridisation of the world, literature can no longer be linked to a coherent idea of the nation. This project aims to reconsider the concept of world literature in light of a postmigrant turn. It focuses on narratives that stand in contrapuntal opposition to national narratives and cultural essentialisms, and that subversively challenge hegemonic notions of culture and identity on thematic, structural, and aesthetic levels.
On this basis, the project seeks (1) to critically reassess and reconfigure the concept of world literature, and (2) to further theorise a poetics of relationality by exploring literature as a space of negotiation within a postmigrant society. In doing so, it also aims to provide impulses for reflexive modes of thinking and acting in the context of broader processes of social transformation.
  • Walking, World, Literature – On the Relational Dimension of Weltliteratur

with Saskia Kroonenberg, Radboud University Nijmegen (Modern Languages and Cultures)

This project addresses the notion of Welt as related to contemporary migration and literature by studying the theme of walking. By making use of literary examples, it reflects on how the walking (migrating) body is narrated (or narrates itself), and what this might tell us about the relation between literature and the earth; that is, between written language, bodies, and the world they live on. How does the act of walking relate to literature in times of globalization? What does the literary theme of walking teach us about Welt(-literatur)? The project makes suggestions as to reimagine language-earth connections by indicating that ‘we’ human beings only temporarily inhabit this planet, without owning it, and while continuously becoming, rather than being. Hence, it studies words on walking, in this exploration of how bodies, which move through languages and space, relate to Welt.
